Haiti-Med
Who we are

Health for all. Help for self-help.

Haiti-Med e.V. is an independent association. We are building a good healthcare system in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. We do this together with Haitian partners and according to clear ethical principles.

Our guiding principles

Health for body, soul, and spirit.

For Haiti-Med, health means more than treating illnesses with medication. Our programs have always taken into account everything people in Haiti need: physically, emotionally, and in their community life.

Our goal
„Health for all people.„
— Mission statement of Haiti-Med e.V.
Four principles

We established these goals together with our Haitian partners.

01
Local participation in decision-making
People in the community have a say.
02
Human Rights
They are the foundation for everything.
03
Holistic development
Against poverty, for hygiene and health.
04
Help for Self-Help
We do not make decisions from afar. We empower people in their communities.
How we work
How a project takes shape

The people in Haiti decide what is needed.

A project takes shape in three steps: an idea, funding, and work on the ground. All three steps take place in Haiti.

  1. 01

    The idea comes from Haiti

Our Haitian partner association Haiti-Med Haiti was founded in 1994 for exactly this purpose. It identifies problems in the community and seeks solutions with people in the villages. It then plans projects and asks the German association for funding.

  2. 02

    Jointly financed

The health centers support one another financially. Everyone involved contributes to the costs.

  3. 03

People from the region are involved

People from the region work on the projects. This is not a handout, but an income for their families. Only projects supported by local people succeed.

For example, we showed how to build a toilet facility. After that, local people built more themselves.

Clear boundaries

What Haiti-Med deliberately does not do.

No large-scale projects
Projects intended to serve the whole country are too large for our association.
No replacement of the state
For example, providing drinking water is the responsibility of the state.
No commercialized services
We do not want to make money from healthcare.
„Building a sewage treatment plant to obtain clean drinking water would clearly be the government's responsibility — if only it truly wanted to.„
— Yves Polynice, Chairman Haiti-Med e.V., 2011
Focus
Mother and child

Mothers and children are the heart of Haiti.

Many men live and work abroad, so families are often separated. Women provide food, care for their children's health, and look after the whole family. That is why the health of mothers and children is our focus.

Mother-Child Program

What the program includes.

  • Guidance and prenatal care during pregnancy.
  • Medical care during childbirth, in cooperation with traditional midwives.
  • Preventive checkups for children up to five years old.
  • Monitoring nutrition and weight, with additional food when needed.
  • Treatment for pregnant women and children.

There are also services for hygiene and nutrition, vaccinations, HIV/AIDS education and testing, support for people living with HIV, basic laboratory tests, consultations, and emergency care.

Our values

People and their dignity are at the center.

This is how we aim to improve Haiti's healthcare system for the long term. Everyone should have access to healthcare, without exception.
